Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: When You Feel Nothing At All

In Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, severe numbness is experienced by the patient. This is brought about by the compression of the nerve that passes through the carpal tunnel in the wrist called the median nerve.

The carpal tunnel is like a hallway and along with the median nerve, nine tendons, called the “Flexor Tendons” traverse in it. In cases of severe physical activities, any or some of the nine tendons gets inflamed and swells, it then takes up a bigger space within the carpal tunnel, causing the median nerve to get squeezed or constricted. The initial sensation would be wrist pain because of the inflammation of the flexor tendons (this is why Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is also called “Wrist Tendonitis”). Following after the pain is extreme numbness of the hand; this happens because sensations felt by the hand are blocked as it passes through the median nerve, they don’t reach the brain, thus, the numb feeling.

Carpal Tunnel Treatment, in the case of an early diagnosis, can be as easy as resting and veering away from stressful or strenuous activities that may cause the condition to be aggravated. Sometimes, the doctor may advice that a splint or a brace be worn in the wrist to avoid unnecessary movements. Other Carpal Tunnel treatments available are anti-inflammatory drugs such as Cortisone substances to help ease the pain and reduce swelling, physical therapy or occupational therapy.  For more serious cases of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, surgical procedures are performed.

This is for educational purposes only. The Tendlite does not have an indication for the treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
